The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind Wikipedia, is forming new partnerships with major tech companies including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and others. These collaborations aim to sustain the future of Wikipedia and its sister projects by ensuring large-scale reuse and distribution of their content.
The foundation announced these partnerships as part of its 25th birthday celebration. The deals include Mistral AI, Perplexity, Nomic, and Reef Media, in addition to existing partners like Google, Ecosia, Pleias, and ProRata. These partnerships are designed to support the financial sustainability of Wikipedia, which is one of the top 10 most-visited websites globally, with over 65 million articles in more than 300 languages, viewed nearly 15 billion times per month.
Wikimedia Enterprise, the commercial product developed by the foundation, allows these tech giants to access and distribute Wikipedia content at a volume and speed that meets their data needs. This not only ensures that the content is used ethically but also provides a revenue stream for the foundation.
“Wikipedia shows that knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans. Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-powered knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever,” says Selena Deckelmann, CPO/CTO of the Wikimedia Foundation.
As AI models and other technology products increasingly rely on factual information from sources like Wikipedia, the foundation’s partnerships ensure that this content is used responsibly. The collaboration with tech giants also highlights the growing importance of human-curated knowledge in an era dominated by AI-generated content.
These partnerships come at a time when the Wikimedia Foundation is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. The organization has launched a birthday campaign, featuring a new video docuseries that offers a behind-the-scenes look at Wikipedia volunteers around the world. Additionally, a “25 Years of Wikipedia” time capsule explores the site’s past, present, and future, with narration provided by founder Jimmy Wales.
The foundation will also host a livestreamed birthday event on January 15 at 4:00 p.m. UTC, featuring guests, games, and entertainment. The event can be found on Wikipedia’s YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels.
In addition to the new partnerships, the Wikimedia Foundation has highlighted recent advances such as upgrades to its tech infrastructure, its own approach to AI, and new experiments like games and short-form video. These efforts aim to keep Wikipedia relevant and accessible in the digital age.
