The United States and Israel are leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including software from Palantir, to conduct large-scale bombings across Iran, raising significant ethical and humanitarian concerns. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,350 civilians, with at least 40 killed in a single airstrike on a residential neighborhood in eastern Tehran.
Survivors report that three residential buildings were bombed simultaneously, while a missile struck a nearby police station. The Iranian Health Ministry confirms that over a dozen hospitals and clinics have been damaged, including the Gandhi Hospital in Tehran. Additionally, U.S. and Israeli strikes have damaged UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as the Chehel Sotoun Palace in Isfahan.
According to The Guardian, Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was injured in the February 28 attack that killed six of his family members, including his father, former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran’s ambassador to Cyprus stated that Khamenei was hospitalized with injuries to his legs, hand, and arm, and was lucky to survive the strike.
Pentagon officials informed lawmakers that the cost of the first six days of the war against Iran exceeded $11.3 billion, excluding the costs of the military buildup in the Mideast. A preliminary assessment by the Pentagon has determined that the U.S. was at fault for a missile strike on an Iranian girls' school on February 28, which killed 168 children and 14 teachers. President Trump has repeatedly blamed Iran’s military for the bombing, but 46 senators, all Democrats or independents, have signed a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demanding a swift investigation and public release of the findings.
The Washington Post reports that the elementary school building was on a U.S. target list and may have been mistaken for a military site. It remains unclear whether AI tools were responsible for the targeting error. The use of AI in warfare raises critical questions about the accuracy and accountability of these systems, especially in scenarios where civilian lives are at risk.
