Oracle's executive chairman and chief technology officer, Larry Ellison, hails Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman as the “smartest engineers” in the tech industry during a keynote at the company's AI World conference in Las Vegas. Ellison, who previously expressed skepticism about artificial intelligence, now sees it as the largest and fastest-growing business in human history.
Ellison, 81, delivers his keynote via live stream, emphasizing the transformative power of AI. He states, “It's bigger than the railroads, bigger than the Industrial Revolution.” He believes that AI will solve humanity's most difficult problems, from early cancer detection to advanced surgical procedures. However, he clarifies that while AI will become more superior, humans will remain the main drivers of society.
Ellison lists Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Meta Platforms' Mark Zuckerberg, and OpenAI's Sam Altman as the “smartest engineers I know.” He credits them with their visionary contributions: Musk for electric vehicles, Zuckerberg for social media, and Altman for mainstreaming AI with ChatGPT. Their investments in AI underscore its viability and potential, according to Ellison.
Ellison highlights OpenAI's GPT-5, Google's Gemini 2.5, xAI's Grok 4, and Meta Llama 4 as the top-ranked AI models. He emphasizes the importance of multimodal capabilities for technologies like the cloud. The demand for AI continues to outpace supply, placing the onus on AI model service providers to enhance their capabilities, he says.
To fully realize the potential of generative AI, Ellison argues that private data must be included in training models, but in a secure manner. He notes, “For these models to reach their peak value, you need to not train them just on publicly available data – you need to make privately-owned data available to those models as well.”
