Google is ramping up the integration of its Gemini AI technology into Android, introducing a range of new features just ahead of Apple’s anticipated AI reboot at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The updates, which include app automation and smarter versions of Chrome and Android Auto, are set to debut at Google I/O next week.
Sameer Samat, who oversees Android, tells CNBC that Gemini will move beyond the traditional assistant model. The AI can now understand screen context and complete multi-step tasks, such as building shopping carts or booking reservations. Samat emphasizes, 'the human is always in the loop,' ensuring users remain in control of their data and actions.
Google is rebuilding parts of Android around Gemini Intelligence to help users complete everyday tasks more easily. The AI can pull relevant information from Gmail, build shopping lists, and even book reservations. For instance, users can ask Gemini to look at a guest list for a barbecue, create a menu, add ingredients to an Instacart list, and return for approval before checkout.
The new features also come with enhanced security measures. Google is rolling out a sweeping set of new security features, ensuring that while Gemini provides convenience, it does not compromise user privacy. The company is committed to giving users control over what Gemini can see, where it can act, and when it needs confirmation.
Alphabet is counting on Gemini to help Google compete directly with OpenAI and Anthropic in the market for artificial intelligence models and services. Meanwhile, Gemini is also powering part of Apple's new AI strategy, giving Google a role in the iPhone maker's reset. This strategic move comes as Apple faces pressure to show a more capable version of Apple Intelligence, which has been lagging behind competitors.
The app automation features will roll out in waves, starting with the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer, before expanding to more Android devices, including watches, cars, glasses, and laptops later this year. Additionally, Google is redesigning Android Auto around Gemini, turning the car into another major surface for its assistant. The new release includes the biggest maps update in a decade and Gemini-powered help with tasks like ordering dinner while driving.
