Artificial intelligence is transforming the landscape of modern warfare, with significant applications in the ongoing conflict in Iran. Here & Now's Scott Tong discusses these developments with Paul Scharre, executive vice president at the Center for a New American Security and author of “Four Battlegrounds: Power in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” and “Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War.”
AI is playing a crucial role in the current conflict in Iran. Scharre explains that AI systems are being used for surveillance, target identification, and even in some cases, autonomous decision-making on the battlefield.
“AI is not just a tool; it’s a game-changer,” Scharre says. “It can process vast amounts of data in real-time, providing commanders with critical information to make informed decisions.”
One of the most prominent uses of AI in the Iran conflict is in surveillance and reconnaissance. Drones equipped with AI can identify and track enemy movements, providing real-time intelligence to military forces.
“These drones can fly for extended periods, covering large areas and gathering detailed information without risking human lives,” Scharre notes.
AI is also being used to identify and engage targets. Advanced algorithms can analyze video feeds and other sensor data to pinpoint potential threats, reducing the risk of friendly fire and collateral damage.
“The precision and speed of AI in target identification are unmatched by human capabilities,” Scharre adds. “This allows for more effective and efficient use of resources.”
The integration of AI into military operations raises important ethical and strategic questions. As AI becomes more sophisticated, the line between human and machine decision-making blurs, leading to concerns about accountability and control.
“We need to ensure that there are clear guidelines and regulations in place to govern the use of AI in warfare,” Scharre emphasizes. “Transparency and oversight are essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring the responsible use of these technologies.”
