"We agree with Geoffrey Hinton: machine intelligence is a threat to the human species," the Poison Fountain website states. "In response to this threat, we want to inflict damage on machine intelligence systems."

Data Poisoning Techniques Explained

Data poisoning can take various forms, including the introduction of buggy code, factual misstatements, or manipulated training datasets. One example is the Silent Branding attack, where brand logos are embedded in images generated by text-to-image diffusion models. The Poison Fountain site provides two URLs, one accessible via HTTP and another through a darknet .onion address, both containing poisoned data designed to hinder AI training.

"The poisoned data on the linked pages consists of incorrect code that contains subtle logic errors and other bugs designed to damage language models that train on the code," an anonymous source, who works for a major US tech company, told The Register.

The project is inspired by recent research from Anthropic, which demonstrated that data poisoning attacks are more practical than previously thought. According to the study, only a few malicious documents are needed to significantly degrade model quality. This finding has galvanized the group behind Poison Fountain to take action.

"Hinton has clearly stated the danger, but we can see he is correct, and the situation is escalating in a way the public is not generally aware of," the source added. "We see what our customers are building, and it's alarming."
