Anthropic is restoring access to its advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, following the U.S. government's decision to lift export controls that had been in place since June. The restrictions were lifted on June 30, allowing Fable 5 to return globally on July 1, while Mythos 5 is being reintroduced to approved U.S. organizations.
The U.S. government cleared Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 30, weeks after a cybersecurity finding triggered an export order that froze access for everyone. This finding, discovered by Amazon researchers, involved a jailbreak that allowed Fable 5 to generate exploit code, bypassing its safeguards.
Anthropic is now reintroducing Fable 5 globally across its platforms starting July 1. Mythos 5, a less restricted variant of the same underlying model, is being restored to a set of U.S. organizations after receiving government approval on June 26.
The episode has spurred closer collaboration between Anthropic and U.S. agencies. The company is working on model testing, threat sharing, and standards for rating jailbreak risks. It is also deepening its partnership with the U.S. government, including giving designated agencies early access to frontier models and their safeguards before public release.
Anthropic, along with other tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, is drafting a framework for scoring the danger level of jailbreaks. These arrangements align with a June 2 executive order on AI security, indicating a tighter link between frontier AI releases and government review.
Traders have wagered on Anthropic's value through a pre-IPO perpetual, a futures contract with no expiry date, listed on the onchain exchange Hyperliquid. The contract fell about 3.7% when access was suspended in June, raising questions about the timing of any public listing.
The reinstatement of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 marks a significant step forward for Anthropic and the broader AI industry. As the company continues to collaborate with U.S. agencies, it sets a precedent for future AI developments and regulatory oversight.
